Threat Assessment Program

UMPD has an active, ongoing Threat Assessment Program (TAP) in which trained personnel conduct criminal and administrative investigations into concerning, disruptive, and threatening behavior reported to UMPD and the UMD Behavior Evaluation and Threat Assessment Team (BETA).

Cases may include workplace violence, alleged threats, harassment, stalking, disruptions to the university’s educational and business functions and/or other power-based personal violence. Officers use assessment strategies developed by the National Association for Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment (NABITA) to ensure fairness, consistency, and thoroughness in high and low stake matters. The goal of TAP is to reduce fear, provide victim support services, and take action to stop violence before it occurs.
