Emergency Communications Center
The Emergency Communications Center (ECC) within the Support Services Bureau is a fully operational 911 call center located inside police headquarters at the University of Maryland. The ECC is a 24/7/365 operation, comprised of non-sworn staff, who are trained and certified as Police Communications Operators (PCOs).
Our PCOs are responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching patrol units to calls for service, notifying Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for response, monitoring alarm systems, providing continuous communications between the ECC and on-duty personnel, handling walk-in requests for police services, and more. At a minimum, our PCOs receive training in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) CN1, Public Safety Telecommunicator I through the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) and Incident Command System through FEMA.
