Student Auxiliary Personnel

The Student Police Auxiliary employs University of Maryland (UMD) students to help further the mission of ‘Terps Protecting Terps.’

Referred to as Student Police Aides (SPAs), our student employees are non-sworn, unarmed staff. SPAs complement our robust safety programming by patrolling the UMD campus in pairs, either on foot patrol or in vehicles. They provide a wide array of services and security, with tasks that range from traffic control for special events to providing walking safety escorts, to staffing our gate houses and more. 

We offer students the opportunity to get valuable work experience. Our shifts can vary, which allows flexibility to balance study, work and relaxation time.

  • Starting salary is $16.50 per hour and can increase to $20.00 per hour with promotions.
  • Many weekend and night shifts pay an extra $2.00 per hour and specific shifts may pay an extra $4.00 per hour.
  • Must be enrolled at the University of Maryland and registered for at least one credit.
  • Students are welcome to apply regardless of program or major course of study.
  • Must possess a valid US Driver's License.
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 12 hours per week (~ 2-3 shifts per week).
