Complaint Process
Use this form to provide a complaint about a UMPD employee.
Complaints may be made in any of the following manners:
- Online via Email: To make an online complaint using email, complete the below form for yourself only and not on someone’s behalf. Complete the form in its entirety and a copy will be emailed to the Internal Affairs Unit.
- In person verbally to an agency employee or by telephone: When reporting what you perceive as improper police conduct to an agency employee, you will be referred to a supervisory or administrative ranked officer on duty. If no such officer is available to speak with you (or you decline to speak with an officer), the agency employee will offer to accept the complaint. Walk-in complaints may be made at the University of Maryland Department of Public Safety, Pocomoke Building, 7569 Baltimore Avenue, College Park, Maryland 20742. Telephone complaints may be made by calling 301-405-3555.
- In person by written complaint: Your complaint may be typed or handwritten in ink. You may use this online form or request a paper version of the complaint form at the University of Maryland Department of Public Safety, Pocomoke Building, 7569 Baltimore Avenue, College Park, Maryland 20742. Additional sheets of paper may be used if you need more space.
When you submit a written complaint form in person, the receiving UMPD staff member will sign for receipt; provide a copy to you; and place originals in sealed envelopes forwarding them to the Office of the Chief where they will be logged and forwarded to the Internal Affairs Unit.
Once a complaint has been made:
After filing a complaint, you will be contacted within 72 hours and provided the name and email address of the agency point of contact for questions that may arise during the investigation.
Once a complaint investigation has started, you will be provided a complaint number. That number will allow you to track the status of the complaint here: complaint status.
You will be notified within 72 hours of an investigation’s outcome, including any discipline imposed in accordance with established confidentiality policies and any applicable law.
Note: Anyone making a complaint will be required to provide a name, mailing address, and phone number or email if they wish to receive notifications. Anonymous complaints are accepted; however, contact information is necessary in order to receive complaint followup.
Please fill out this form completely. A copy will be emailed to Internal Affairs, and you will be able to print the completed form for your records.
