UMPD Dashboard

Introduction

The University of Maryland Police Department’s mission is to serve the university community, to protect life and property, and to uphold the law, all within a supportive, respectful and inclusive environment.

The UMPD Dashboard includes calls for service, complaint, arrest, and traffic stop data in a clear and concise manner. This interactive dashboard and its data are ever changing. When active investigations yield criminal charges, the information will change to reflect the new findings. This data will be updated quarterly.

Calls for Service

UMPD is responsible for protecting life and property and providing services and resources to more than 60,000 students, faculty, staff, and visitors, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The campus is divided up into four sectors and patrol officers are assigned to a sector at the start of each shift. When not assigned to a call, officers are conducting patrols in their sector, focusing on crime prevention efforts and community outreach.

Calls for service includes: responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, initiating traffic stops, conducting building checks, responding to vehicle and building lockouts, investigating traffic collisions and providing safety escorts.

Jurisdiction

UMD
The property that constitutes the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park campus is, by law, the primary jurisdiction of UMPD. 

Prince George’s County
UMPD has ongoing concurrent jurisdictional agreements with the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD), Riverdale Park Police Department (RPPD) and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). These agreements allow our officers the ability to take law enforcement action in areas surrounding university property.

Unreported
These are incidents that our officers responded to in which the location was unable to be verified by our reporting system.

Complaints

The agency investigates all allegations of inappropriate conduct by its employees. These investigations are necessary to ensure successful resolution for those allegations and to ensure compliance with established University of Maryland standards as well as those established by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

Traffic Stops

The University of Maryland Police Department collects data on traffic stops for motor vehicle law violations in accordance with established law under MD Transportation Article §25-113.

Traffic stop means any instance when a law enforcement officer stops the driver of a motor vehicle and detains the driver for any period of time for a violation of the Maryland Vehicle Law.

Traffic stop does not include:

  • A checkpoint or roadblock stop
  • A stop of multiple vehicles due to a traffic accident or emergency the stopping of vehicles for public safety purposes
  • A stop based on the use of radar, laser, or vascar technology
  • A stop based on the use of license plate reader technology

Arrests

Arrests are categorized by type, which includes DUI/DWI, Criminal Summons, On-View Arrest, Citation-in-Lieu, Warrant, Juvenile Arrest, Traffic Arrest, and Unknown. Citation-in-Lieu data includes criminal and civil infractions.
