Clery Act Info & Reports

Originally known as the Campus Security Act, the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act is the landmark federal law that requires colleges and universities across the United States to disclose information about crime on and around their campuses. The law is tied to an institution's participation in federal student financial aid programs, and it applies to most institutions of higher education both public and private. The Clery Act is enforced by the United States Department of Education.

Clery Act Statistics

The Clery Act Statistics page lists the Clery reportable crimes that occur on campus, in unobstructed public areas immediately adjacent to or running through the campus and at certain non-campus facilities including Greek housing and remote classrooms. The statistics are gathered from campus police or security, local law enforcement and other school officials who have "significant responsibility for student and campus activities."

Annual Security Report

The Annual Security Report (ASR) publication is compiled and distributed annually in compliance with the Clery Act and contains crime statistics and statements of security policy. Annually, prior to October 1st, current students and employees are sent the following by US Postal Service, campus mail and/or electronic mail: The Annual Security Report publication and notification that the current edition of the Annual Security Report publication has been posted on the University of Maryland Police Department’s website. Printed copies may be obtained from the University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD), Pocomoke Building (007), 7569 Baltimore Ave, College Park, MD 20742 (301-405-3555). The publication and any updates will be posted on-line.

As mandated by the Clery Act, the university publishes an annual crime statistics report which is set forth in the Annual Security Report. In addition to offenses reported to UMPD, the crime statistics report also includes offense reports obtained from local police agencies, and university offices and officials that are detailed in the Annual Security Report. The university is a state educational institution, which is subject to the Maryland Public Information Act.

Disclaimer: The provisions of the Annual Security Report are not to be regarded as a contract between the student or employee and the University of Maryland. The policies, programs and services described are subject to change from time to time at the sole discretion of the university. The policies, programs and services described are not intended to be a guarantee of individual safety or the protection of personal property.

Emergency Notifications & Timely Warnings

UMPD will issue emergency notifications (text messages) and timely warnings (email) to the campus community through the UMD Alerts System. In the event of a situation or incident on or near UMD which poses an imminent threat to the health or safety, text message(s) will be issued. When there is important information about a crime or incident on or near UMD which poses an ongoing risk to the safety of the UMD community, an email will be issued.

Daily Crime and Incident Logs

With a few exceptions, a public Daily Crime and Incident Log is maintained that records crimes reported to UMPD. The log contains the nature, date, time, general location, and, if known, disposition of crimes. Entries are made and updated within two business days of the report or update. The log is available on-line or may be viewed at UMPD Headquarters. To help enable timely warnings and inclusion of incidents on daily logs, it is strongly encouraged that crimes be reported expeditiously and directly to UMPD.

Campus Security Authority Incident Logs

Provides basic information on incident data provided to the University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD) by designated Campus Security Authorities. These incidents may not have been reported to the Police for a response or investigation, but merely for informational purposes. The cases are generally referred to the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct or to the Office of Student Conduct for appropriate action. Information is provided periodically and updated within two business days.

Annual Fire Safety Report

Published by the Department of Environmental Safety, Sustainability & Risk (ESSR), the Annual Fire Safety Report contains information about campus fire safety practices and standards of the University of Maryland.
