About Us

The University of Maryland Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency. We are responsible for protecting life and property and providing services and resources to more than 60,000 students, faculty, staff, and visitors, 24 hours a day. 

We have consistently maintained international accreditation from The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) -- since 1996.  

We provide a 911 Emergency Call Center, Security Operations Center, Police Services, Community Outreach programs, Building Security Services, Student Police Auxiliary, Training Academy, and more. We have over 100 police officers, civilians, and student employees.

Authority

Our police officers are certified by the Maryland Police & Correctional Training Commissions (MPCTC) in accordance with Public Safety Article 3-201 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. Each officer has the authority to respond to and investigate crimes, make arrests, and carry firearms, as well as to direct and/or regulate traffic and enforce Maryland traffic law.
